Yesterday I heard three different people share three different stories about their Sunday School class. (The same class for all three) Each one spoke about how humble hearts and lives are being melted together in love and growing together in Christ.
This is a work of grace – and in it I rejoice and give thanks to Jesus. This is discipleship taking place. This is gospel growth.
This is what Paul is talking about in Colossians 2:2: “that their hearts may be encouraged, being knit together in love, to reach all the riches of full assurance of understanding and the knowledge of God’s mystery, which is Christ.” (ESV)
Paul is saying that when our hearts are knit together in love with other believers and growing together in God’s Word, we soon find ourselves rejoicing together in the treasure of Christ Jesus, humbling ourselves, sharing our struggles, fighting together against sin and celebrating each other’s victories. We discover that as we grow together we are encouraged together. We are more confident and assured in our faith and understanding of the gospel of Christ.
John Piper says: “The deepest and most certain insights into the character of God and the wisdom of God come into heads that are attached to loving hearts. The riches of assured understanding and knowledge of God’s mystery, and the treasures of Christ’s wisdom come into the heads of those whose hearts are knit together in love.” (desiringgod.org)
It was an encouraging Monday for me.
